Georgetown repeats as Division I Champions Louisville takes Division II Season Title
April 24, 2010
With the 2010 Kentucky Derby only a week away, it was not surprising that the season standings in the KCQRL would come down to the wire. And it took a photo finish to determine the winner. Georgetown College, defending champions in Division I, rolled through the field with 5 straight wins at Eastern Kentucky University Saturday, and with the wins, ended up tying the University of Louisville in the all important season standings. With both teams completing best 4 records of 19-1, it was on to the first tie breaker, head-to-head competition. The teams split their matches this year with both teams winning twice. So it was on to the 2nd tiebreaker, total points in the best 4 matches. Georgetown edged out Louisville in this category, 1267-1177. Matt Church, coach of the Louisville team, was extremely disappointed, saying "We were short-handed today with some of my engineering students having final exams. But give credit to Georgetown, they are worthy champs. And I'm proud of the way our team competed their first year in this league."
Ohio University Southern capped a great season with a 2nd place finish in Richmond, and with it came the third place trophy for the season. Murray State University rebounded well to place 3rd at the EKU tournament. Rounding out the field at EKU were teams from host EKU, University of the Cumberlands, and the University of Louisville.
In Division II, there was no photo finish, as this was a one-horse race, with U of L completely dominating the competition all season long. The Cardinals went a perfect 4-0 at the Eastern tournament, capping of a very impressive 23-1 record in their first season. The battle at EKU was for 2nd place, and Henderson battled Jefferson until the very end. Jefferson toyed with Henderson in the first match, 31-19, but Henderson came back and laid a beatdown on Jefferson after lunch, 42-15. The 2nd place trophy went to Jeffeson, who ended the tournament with 3 more points than Henderson.
For the season, placing behind U of L in second place was Georgetown, finishing the year with an impressive 20-5 record over 5 tournaments. Jefferson outlasted Henderson, Pikeville, Big Sandy and University of the Cumberlands to get the 3rd place Division II season trophy, its 2nd in 3 years.
Outgoing KCQRL President Nina Queen from Ohio University Southern had great praise for the league. "Obviously, the big story this year was University of Louisville entering our league and the great success they had, but there were other tremendous stories. My team (OUS) won their first tournament since I have been coaching. And we had a total of 6 teams in Division I pick up trophies with top 3 finishes, and 5 teams in Division II finish at least one tournament in the top 3 and bring home an award. That just goes to show the great depth of our league."
The league takes a well deserved break over the summer before returning to competition next fall.

Great Food & Celebrity Moderators Highlight Tournament in Ironton April 17, 2010
The students and coaches who made the trip to Ironton, Ohio not only found themselves in a highly competitive tournament this past weekend, but also were rewarded by a delicious lunch featuring grilled steak, chicken, and a buffet of great side items. And the players also had the privilege of playing under some big - name moderators, including Rick Mayne, Bob Smith, Bos Johnson and Ernie G. Anderson.
In Division I, Georgetown rolled through the field with a 5-0 record, with its closest competition coming from host Ohio Southern, who finished in 2nd place with a strong 4-1 record. The University of Cumberlands took its first trophy of the season, finishing in 3rd place. Rounding out the rest of the field in Division I were teams from Pikeville, Eastern Kentucky University, and Murray State University.
Georgetown also had no problems in Division II, winning all matches and compiling a perfect 5-0 record. Henderson surprised the field by grabbing 2nd place, Pikeville finished third. Henderson actually lost their first 2 matches, but finished the day strong, winning their last 3. Also competing in the field were teams from Big Sandy, Jefferson, and host Ohio University Southern.
Teams in the KCQRL will only have a week to digest the great food in Ohio and be ready for the next tournament in 7 days at Eastern Kentucky University. This last match will decide the end of the season standings, as well as provide the coaches an opportunity to have the annual coach's meeting. With 6 teams picking up trophies throughout the year in Division I and 5 teams in Division II picking up trophies, the season-long awards appear to still be wide open.
Georgetown Wins at Home Takes crown by virtue of tiebreaker March 6th, 2010
Georgetown finished undefeated. The University of Louisville also finished undefeated. Unfortunately for the fans who hoped to see another clash of the titans in the Kentucky Collegiate Quick Recall League, it was not to be. By the luck of the draw (7 teams with 6 rounds), U of L never faced Georgetown, so it came down to total points, with Georgetown outscoring U of L 468 - 411 over the 5 matches. Georgetown coach and tournament director Barbara Burch spoke about the issue, saying "It's just the luck of the draw. With 7 teams and only 6 rounds, each team will not play one other team. We certainly don't rig our draws like they do at Jefferson. I know some people were disappointed that the two top teams didn't meet, but there are other rivalries in the league. And if we started having draws that weren't random, someone would be left out of a match they desired." Murray State University outdistanced EKU, Ohio Southern, Pikeville, and Cumberland to grab the third place trophy - their first of the year.
In Division II, Louisville had no problems running the table, accumulating an astounding 557 points over the five matches. Their closest match, to runner-up Georgetown, was 92-36. For the second match in a row, Pikeville and Jefferson ended the match with identical 3-2 records, and for the 2nd tournament in a row, Pikeville went back to Eastern Kentucky with the 3rd place finish, by virtue of scoring more points than Jefferson, 264-240. Jefferson coach Pete Rodski was extremely frustated, saying "Of course I am disappointed. I've got a van full of kids that were looking to pay Pikeville back from the last tournament, and we didn't even get to play them. Maybe they ought to look at rigging their draws here at Georgetown. Hopefully we'll get another shot next month." Henderson finished in 5th place, followed by Ohio University Southern and Big Sandy Community & Technical College in the 7 team Division II field at Georgetown College.
The league takes a 6 week break from tournament action, before finishing the season with matches at Ohio University Southern on the 17th of April and at Eastern Kentucky University on April 24th. The last match will accomodate the coach's meeting and determine season standings for the league.
