Standardized Draws
These draws were adopted as the Kentucky Collegiate Quick Recall League standards in April 1999. Schools that host a tournament are required to use these draws. If errors or problems come to your attention, please consult with a league officer.
Please note that if you will use the draws for 7, 9, 11, 13, or 15 teams you will need to pre-select the “A” team. See comments at the bottom of the list.
Suggested procedures for use:
Print these pages. Identify the particular draws you will need, and add the appropriate room numbers. Cut, paste, and photocopy. There’s no need to re-type.
OR
If you have skills using an editor such as Netscape Composer, FrontPage, etc., you may prefer to download and rework this page, keeping the draws you need and deleting the rest, adding room numbers, etc. Then print and photocopy. Again, there’s no need to re-type.

***********************************************************************
These draws are formulated from the following premises:
1. We would like all first round draws to be similar, regardless of the number of teams, so that last-minute changes can be accommodated relatively easily.
2. We would like each team to play the most matches possible,
3. We would like all teams to play the same number of matches if possible,
4. We would like each team to play against as many different opponents as possible,
5. We would like each team to play in as many different rooms as possible,
6. We would like all matchups to be determined at the beginning of the tournament (via a round-robin system).
Note that in the draws for 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 teams, Team A plays 6 matches while all other teams play 5. Here’s the rationale: with an odd number of teams in six rounds of play, it is impossible for all teams to play the same number of matches. As one solution we often have seeded the final round so as to give the lowest-ranked team an extra bye — i.e., they play one fewer match than everyone else. The pause to seed the teams often causes confusion and a loss of time, and takes away a playing opportunity from a team that needs it the most. What if we turned that system around and gave the weakest team an extra game? That is what the plan printed here does. The lowest-ranked team going into an odd-draw tournament would be assigned the “A” slot and would play all 6 matches. In their status as the lowest-ranked team, they would be least likely to upset the tournament standings by playing an extra game.
Q. How would this work if it is the first game of the season?
A. We would use the previous year’s statistics to determine the lowest-ranked team.
Q. Why are the multiple byes located in round 6 (rather than near lunch time)?
A. This allows many of the officials to leave at 2:30; they are kind to give us their time and we should use it efficiently. This does, coincidentally, also allow teams to leave early if they are not vying for a trophy and need to get on the road.
